Photo Shoot Perparation

These are photos of bands/ a singer, they are all posed photos. They show us how the band/singer has changed.

For the 2004 Avril Lavigne album cover she is wearing dark colours, she has dyed black streaks in her hair and  the photo is black and white. In the 2011 photo it has bright colours, she is still wearing dark colours, but she looks more feminne because she is posing.

In the early Paramore photo we see dark colours, and a number of different poses. In the more recent picture

And below is the back of my leaflet, with bands and compettion.

Star Analysis- Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne was born in Canada in 1984.
She started her music career in 2002 when she signed with RCA Records. Her first album was 'Let Go'. This started her major music career.

Her general  target audience is punk rocker teenage girls and occasionally boys.
She has some similarities to Amy Lee the lead singer of Evanescence. They both specialise in the rock genre and style themselves in dark clothing, but also show their feminine and vulnerable sides in some of their music videos.
The public have labeled her "The pop punk princess", I think this is because as she has grown up she has developed her style to be less black clothing and more use of pink but with a punk- rock feel.

Avril Lavigne- What the hell

Avril Lavigne- Let Go

The Origins of Alternative Rock

Alternative Rock emerged in the 1980's. It became widely popular in the 1990's with popularization of such bands as Nirvana, Hole, and Smashing Pumpkins.
Alternative Rock has lots of  sub genres-
Independent music.
Grunge
Brit pop
Gothic rock
Indie pop

Alt rock became widely popular and originated from some of these places-
Athens, Georgia – Illinois – Manchester, England – Massachusetts – Seattle, Washington

1990's popularization-Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Hole, and Smashing Pumpkins.

Nirvana led the way for alternative rock, with songs like "smells like teen spirt". Off their hugely influencetle second album Nevermind.

Because of Nirvanas popularity Alternative rock suddenly became mainstream, and other Alt rock bands began to be noticed as well.

Unfortunatley at the end of the 90's alternative rock declined because Kurt Cobain, Nirvanas front man died and Pearl Jam had a lawsuit against Ticketmaster.

Thankfully at the beginning of the 21st century new Alternative Rock bands appeared-
Linkin Park, Muse, The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Killers, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Starting a new Alternative rock era.

Research Alternative Rock on TV and Films

Empire Records- Film in 1995. All the characters in this film look like alternative rockers. Some dark clothing, broody, converses/ dark sneekers, baggy clothes.

Brothers of the Head- 2005. Siamese twins get picked in the 1970's by a music producer who transforms them into a rock n' roll act.

My cover- Nirvana Nevermind

This is my redone Nirvana Nevermind album cover.

Three record labels

I like the design for this because it is simple but effective. You remember it because Virgin is a popular label.

Virgin Records was founded in 1972 by Richard Branson. The company is of British origin.

I thought this was a good design because the titles and image created reflect each other. The city and sun are created using the title.  Sun city records is an Australian record label.
I like this design because it uses an upside down "T" to give the image of a thorn. The colours used make it feel modern and upbeat. Just two simple colours.
Thorn EMI was created in 1979 after the two seperate groups Thorn and EMI (Electrical Music Industry). The group is based in London.

Record Label- Revolution Records

This is my monochrome version of my record label .

I got the idea from The Beatles song revolution, I used a picture of John Lennon's glasses because they are infamous and simple.

Classical Music

Codes and conventions-
The familiar and predictable forms and techniques used by the media to communicate certain ideas or to convey a desired impression.
Classical music is the art music produced in, or rooted in, the traditions of Western liturgical and secular music, encompassing a broad period from roughly the 11th century to present times. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common practice period.

The most infamous classical musicians include,Beethoven, Handel, Bach and Mozart e.t.c.

As we can see from three of the classical music videos, the locations seem to be set in opera houses. They can also be filmed in old worn down appartments.
All the conductors and orchestra are well dressed in bow ties and black gowns.
A lot of the shots in the videos are long shots and close ups. They use long shots because it gives the idea that the entire orchestra is working together, as one. Feeling of community. Close ups of the conductor, singers and instruments being played are used constantly throughout every music video.
The editing is slow setting the pace for the calming songs.
