Work done towards music video in half term

We have made a group on facebook so that we can talk and discuss options and potential ideas easily, and as a group. We discussed possibly locations such as the wood by the college, and the train station. We thought that we would draw our ideas for clothing, then see what we can find on the internet and in shops. Who we might use for the music video.

Half term work- Six shots from music videos

The video is 'Stop and Stare' by One Republic. I chose this shot because it gives us the setting that the musician is in. A dim lit room, with breezer block walls. It shows us what kind of clothes are related to the artist, dark hoody and trousers. I also chose this because we don't actually see the artist properly, we are only given the idea of what they would be like.

Neon Trees- Animal. I chose this shot because it shows the band having a good time. It uses props well (the pillow/feathers, silly string, and lights.) The feathers help show the mayhem of the band. The lights show that they are light hearted and modern as do their clothes and style.

Sleigh Bells- Infinity Gutiars. I chose this shot because in that one close-up it describes the band and their music. I like this close-up of  someone lighting a match, because it shows us that the music is going to be explosive and that the band is bad ass.

Muse- Hysteria. I like this shot because it is from the view of the protaganist character. I believe that using a frist person shot like that might be useful for our music video, to help get the audience on the same page as the character.

Paramore- Misery Business. I chose this shot because it shows the attitude of Hayley Williams. In the video she is proud and she is telling her story about beating the high school 'bad girl' to the guy they both wanted. We get the idea of what genre the band is in as well from the way Hayley has been made up, and the words written on the floor in the background  in black with white boarder.

Flobots- Handle Bars. I chose this over the shoulder shot, because it shows the strength and dertimination in the protaganists eyes and face. It really goes with the power of the music. I love the way you have the characters hand on the shoulder of the homeless man, it shows the goodness and honor in him and what he stands for.

Sophie Swan Rap Video

We created videos using clips and music on Final Cut. We then put them together our own ways, to create effective music videos.  A particular favourite moment is when the tiger holds and shakes his head when the song says 'I think I might lose my head".

Feedback from CD COVER

Good use of colours. I looked at my Alternative rock mood board and used some off the colours which seemed to stand out.

Good effects. I was inspired to use the stained glass effect on my cover because The Killers had used a similar effect on thier album Day and Age.

Theme doesn't make sense. The images link together because the theme is Homecoming.

Appropriate font. The font I used was Bascula College, I felt it was a good choice.

Images don't relate to each other. All the images that I took where images relating to homecoming. A rose is given to girl at homecoming, a tiara is given to the homecoming queen, most high schools have crests, and an alternaive rocker is likely to wear converses with a tuxedo.

Can't see the punk. There is no punk because this is a Alternative rock album.

Digi Pack 11/2/11

Today I took the photos I needed for my digipack which included a smart trousers and coverses combo, a rose on a window sill, and a tiara on a table. I then put them on my digi pack and added a stained glass effect to all the pictures, I also changed their brightness and contrast to make them darker.

Hey Monday - Homecoming Digipack test

This is a test Digipack for our chosen band and song( Hey Monday- Homecoming).
I tried to use images which relate to the american high school celebration Homecoming. This why there is a tiara, girl crying, boy in converses and tuxedo, and red rose.  I used a typical college font but edited it to give it a alternative rock edge.

Hey Monday-Homecoming lyrics analysis

The song is about a girl who is tired of a certain boy always getting back with her, so she confronts him. The girl sounds quite proud because she has confronted him and angry at remembering what he has done to her.

When I listen to this song I can see her coming home and confronting him. Her getting off a train in autumn, the leafs floating about her in the wind. Some flash backs to happier times.

Homecoming Lyrics

Homecoming, I'm coming
My sweet mistake
Summer's over, hope it's not too late
I'm pacing, impatient
Up in my head
Taken back to the sidewalk where we met

And carved out our names
Do you remember that?

I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Did you take off while I was gone?
I missed it all, I messed you up, I missed you
I'm coming home, I wanna know
When all the leaves begin to fall
If I'm falling, falling apart for you

Descending, I'm spinning
Lost all defense
How could you swallow me again?
I left you, I meant to
Couldn't let you in
Never mind a single word I said

Carve out your name
Do you remember that?

I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Did you take off while I was gone?
I missed it all, I messed you up, I missed you.
I'm coming home, I wanna know
When all the leaves begin to fall
If I'm falling, falling apart

You've got control of me
Is this the end of me?
‘Cause I just can't cut up the strings
I'm coming back for more
Don't let your heart go
Please don't walk away

Homecoming, I'm coming, I'm coming back

I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Did you take off while I was gone?
I missed it all, I messed you up, I missed you
I'm coming home, I wanna know
When all the leaves begin to fall
If I'm falling, falling apart
I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Did you take off while I was gone?
I missed it all, I messed you up, I missed you.
I'm coming home, I wanna know
When all the leaves begin to fall
If I'm falling, falling apart.

Hey Monday- Homecoming (Emotional Response)

It makes you feel like you want to go confront someone, who has done you wrong.  Cassadee Pope who sings the song sounds like she really knows the feeling of finally confronting a certain boy who has been in her life. It uses raw emotion.

Ten different Alt Rock album covers

They all have similar font styles. Using simple fonts. Some look Gothic others look more modern. Most of these album covers use dark colours or black and white filter. The pictures used keep the attention of the buyer/ onlooker. The Foo Fighter album cover in particluar looks vintage, because they have used a ray gun with a vintage feel.  The Nirvana album cover is probably the most well known of this selection with its iconic baby in the water photo.
The Pretty Reckless album cover gives us the idea that the band is bad ass, with its photo of a young girl in a leather jacket holding a lit lighter.

Hey Monday - Homecoming Research

The band is  an American four piece rock band from West Palm Beach, Florida. They formed in 2008.

The band is made up of
  • Cassadee Pope- Lead vocals, guitars.
  •  Mike Gentile- Lead guitar.
  •  Alex Lipshaw- Rhythm guitar.
  • Patrick McKenzie- Drums, percussion.
They were discovered when 'Fall out Boy' member Pete Wentz was in Crush Management Offices and heard them playing. He wanted to sign them to his label Decaydance, Columbia Records also wanted to sign them so the band now have a joint record deal with both music labels. Hey Monday has even gone onto tour with Fall Out Boy and other alternative rock bands such as All Time Low.

Their first album 'Beneath It All' is still in production. But the band is still touring so haven't yet finished the album.

Pretty Red logo

Band Name - Pretty Red
Logo- I tried to use a simple but responsive idea, something that would stay in somebody's mind. I got the idea for the doll because the band is a girl alternative rock band, I liked this particular doll because it uses black and is simple. I took the doll picture and then put a red background to it. I put the bands name in tattoos on the dolls arms giving it an alternative rocky edge.

Alternative Rock - Mood Board

This mood board shows all the ideas and items I believe create and represent Alternative Rock.
I have noticed that a lot of people wear stripes, whether that is with red and white stripes or black and white.  The fonts are similar as well, they look as if they have been done by the hand of a student, which refers to the age range of people who listen to Alternative rock.  The Anarchy sign on the shoe (pictured left) is one associated with Alt rock, it appears in the Nirvana video for their song 'Smells like teen spirit'.

Alternative rock -Photo shoot

This is a contact sheet of what i saw as our best photos.

Amber, Leanne and I made a plan of what shots we wanted, by sketching out the shots before hand. We then did the shoot out in the college wood. We wore dark make up, skinny jeans, studded belt, and dark clothes. I wore a dark red and black checkered shirt, with a black shirt underneath, black skinny's and black converse style shoes.
In the photos we took we did our best to look broody.
In the afternoon we went out again in the wooded part and took less serious photos, of us fighting with sticks and hanging off trees. Most of the poses we made were brooding looks because a lot of Alt rock bands pose in a brooding way when they do photos. We took the photos in the woods because the wood is dark, and can be used to take good photos. You can use the environment around you for props and great setting.

This is the photo I choose to edit. I picked this photo because it shows the playful and dramatic side to alternative rock. We have sun light behind us but it's dark in the foreground, which helped show the dark side of Alt rock which we were in.
I made the photo black and white because it added an older nineties feel, which was the decade for Alternative rock. I added the neon pink and green outlines for the modern feel, then smudge them together when they clashed.
