Hey Monday- Homecoming Redone music video final

Finished DigiPack

This is my completed DigiPack for the song/ album Homecoming by Hey Monday.
The theme is based on homecoming due to the songs title. I used a tiara, a rose, tuxedo/converse, and I created a high school crest to keep the theme going.
I used the Stain glass filter on all of the pictures. I was inspired to use this effect from the Killers album Day and Age. The font I used was Bascula College because I believe it gives the right look for the Digipack.  For the back cover I researched other songs Hey Monday had written and preformed, this gives it a more realistic effect. I used the tiara because at all homecoming's the biggest event of the night is who will be crowned king and queen, and because the point of the song is the girl feeling powerful. Queens are supposed to be this. I used the rose because the can symbolise so many things when it comes to love, but for this song it meant one love was alone. I used the tuxedo and converse styling on the back because it shows us that the boy mentioned in the song is now alone, but that he was an alt rocker like the girl. I created the crest on the front cover because it shows you what kind of album it is, and what it's about.

Finished Hey Monday magazine advert

I used this font so that the digipack and advert stay continuous as a product.  I reused the crest as well because that is the albums logo.  I used Hey Mondays' records labels logos for authenticity. I chose the colour red as a main motif because it stands out and is one of the most common alternative rock colours.

Evaluation task 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real life media products?

1. This shot shows the link between visuals and lyrics. The lyrics for this is "Don't let my heart go".

2. This typifies the way the record company would want the band to be represented because, this shot is made psychedelic on the guitar riff to express how alternative it is.

3. This illustrates the use of genre in the music video because you can see the instruments we use and the way we are dressed.

4. This shot shows intertextuality because they are both filmed in woods but ours is a music video not a film.

5. This demonstrates our use of camera because it is a shot filmed from the ground at a slightly canted angle. Making it different to the rest of the more average shots in the music video.

6. This demonstrates the use of lighting in our music video because a lot of the lighting is natural which gives it more of a realistic alternative feel.

7. This picture shows the mise-en-scene in our video very well. It shows the kind of clothes alternative rockers wear, and the equipment they use.

8. The first picture I used was of Paramore - Decode, from the film Twilight. The band is in the forest rocking out, this is similar to ours where for certain parts of the music video we are rocking out in the woods.

9. I used this picture of Natalia Kills- Mirrors for the fact that I have watched other music videos because I was influenced by the way there were two sides to her and she was being tugged at by the bad side. This reflects in our music video when Leanne is sitting at her mirror singing about the fact that she has broken up with her boyfriend and is really having a go at him.

Evaluation 1- part 2

Evaluation task 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think the combination is effective because there are a lot of similarities between the ancillary tasks of the digipack and magazine advert, and the actual music video.

This is my finished digipack.

This is my finished magazine advert.

The first similarity we see is the use of flowers on the digipack and the use of flowers in the video. The flowers in the video are being dropped on the floor by Leanne, whereas the flower on the digipack is on its own on the window still. Both the flowers' seem lonely, one on its own and the others being abandoned on the ground. This can reflect the loneliness the lead singer (Leanne) is feeling because she is broken hearted.

The next thing we notice is the use of shoes in the video. On the digipack we have a pair of converses being woren by a boy. In the video we have Leanne wearing a pair of converses, these relate to each other because it is like the pair on the digipack is the shoes of the boy who broke Leanne's heart and we can see that these people were similar in style.

We see that there is a guitar of the Hey Monday band crest, in the video we see how the guitar is used to convey the alternative rock vibe throughout. In a certain part of the video we used effects on final cut to really show the world how the guitar is used.

The final similarity we see is the use of jewellery in both the digipack and the video. On the digipack we have the tiara which is more sparkly and looks more dramatic. With the music video we used a ring which didn't look to grand, but it seems more realistic, and can also show us how small and unimportant the boy who broke Leanne's heart thought their relationship was.

Evaluation task 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

"More angles and cuts in the performance section(performance in the woods).
Guitar. Amber needs to play harder to the music." This was the main concern the class and the teacher had with the rough cut video. To improve this we edit the way Amber played the guitar we slowed down the shot, reversed her playing and added some wild psychedelic colours.

The drafts were said to be useful and easy to understand. I believe that the notes/drafts we made were one of the most useful and rewarding things we could've done for the video, because they set out what we had to do  and how we wanted it done.

Original costume sketches; Amber
The sketches were basic but useful. People thought that they would be good towards getting an idea of the way we wanted things and how they compared to the genre.

Original costume sketches; Sophie
Original scene sketch; Forest with band
Original sketch;Car park Leanne

Original sketch; Town band(Never used)
Original sketch; Bedroom Leanne

Evaluation task 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

This is the equipment we used. A camera, tripod, laptop, two guitars, an amplifier, drums, drum sticks.
These are the sites we used for our music video work:

I used Blogger to note, explain and show all our work. It was really good to get to put all my work in one place and helped when I needed to go back and use an example from a past blog.

We used Final Cut to edit together our music video, and to add effects. We had some trouble rendering on Final cut. So we started the editing again which worked out well as we were able to improve our music video further.

Facebook was used when we needed people to comment and discuss the rough cut and the final video. We created a group on Facebook to do that. We used the group in the construction of the video to discuss ideas, and talk about when and where were filming.  We had some good and helpful responses, over facebook. It was better to do it on a social networking site because we had a wider response view then we would've if we had gone round and asked people.

Millers Music Centre (Cambridge) was the very nice business that let us use their drums for free. It was the second music site we looked at for the use of hiring or borrowing a drum kit. We had multiple emails with the manager of the business about the use of the drums.Though we had some complications about the delivery of the the kit, which was sorted out, we found that they were poilte and apoligised for the complications,   we would suggest people using them in the future for music videos.

25/3/11

This morning we have been getting ready for the filming in the woods. We have been choosing jewellery for Leanne to wear. Soon we will do her make up, and go film.

25/3/11 part 2

This is the dress Leanne will be wearing for the river scene.

Thursday 24 March 2011

24/3/11 part 4

We have decided that instead of doing the filming in the wood today we will do the filming tomorrow morning.

24/3/11 part 3

Today in the afternoon lesson we are filming the scene in the woods with the flowers and the ring. The problem we are having is finding a ring to use for the scene.

Tomorrow on 25/3/11 Leanne and Amber in the afternoon are going down by the river to film the scene with the love letter and the origami swan.

The part of the river where Leanne and Amber are filming.

24/3/11

Today I will be working with Leanne on the editing of the music video.  Amber is blogging the work we do.

24/3/11 part 2

After a talk with Steve we are going to be doing these things for the music video;

  • Soft edit at the beginning of the video.
  • More guitar- think of what's going on.
  • Use mirror shot at beginning.
  • Forest
  • Eye contact
  • Abstract
  • River with swan or boat- Love letter
  • Forest-
Shot 1- walking and dropping flowers.
Shot 2- placing of flowers and ring.

Wednesday 23 March 2011

23/3/11 part 2

Today we have redone 3 minutes of the music video. Without any rendering problems.

23/3/11

Today because of the rendering difficulty Leanne and I have started to edit our music video again. As this option would be faster than having to edit than wait for it to stop rendering.  Today I will be helping Leanne edit so we can edit quicker, and hopefully for preciously.

22/3/11

Today we have been perfecting our blogs adding images and pictures.
Today we have had a problem with editing the music video,  the problem is rendering. Rendering is slowing down our editing which is causing us to believe that this will be a major problem when we complete the music video.

What we have to do to perfect the music video

  • Someone needs to finish the costume designs (Colour in)
  • Finish editing
  • Perfect blog

Photos from music video

The guitars and amp we were going to use in our video. We ended up only using the amp and the white guitar.
Leanne doing her hair and make up for the performance in the woods.
Us setting up the equipment for the scene in the woods. Seen is the drum kit, camera and tripod, the guitar, amp, and Leanne.
Amber doing my make up for the performance.
The drum kit. It didn't take as long as I thought it would because I had set it up before and dismantled it.

Feedback for the video via Facebook

Me and my group created a group on facebook where we put the rough cut music video for people to give us feedback so we can improve the video.

Some of the comments we have had back are:
Good locations
But better performance in the woods.
Works well with the genre.

Hey Monday- Homecoming Redone Music Video Rough cut

Feedback from groups watching music video

What were the strongest parts of the video?

The video had good locations.
Leanne looks appropriately styled.
Handheld shots were effective.
Camera shots.
Lighting.
Editing.

Which bits of the performance need improving?

More angles and cuts in the performance section(performance in the woods).
Guitar. Amber needs to play harder to the music.

How appropriate was the video to the genre of the music? Anything that could be described as unconventional?

The locations fit the genre and the style of the video fits.

I believe that all the feedback can be used to improve the music video. I think that we will work hard to improve the performance in the woods, especially with Amber.

9/3/11 the filming we did in cambridge

On wednesday the 9th march we went into Cambridge to a garage by the Grafton centre to film a few shots for the music video.
We went to town at lunch time to get filming started early. We used the Grafton toilets  as a costume and make up area,  we went to Poundland and brought speakers which you attach to your mobile to play music louder and clearer. We used the speakers for our performance, they worked tremendously well.
We managed to get a lot of good clips for the video, we had no complications, everything went smoothly.

Wednesday 16 March 2011

16/3/11 - 2

In the afternoon lesson we are editing the music video footage. We have imported the footage from our camera and Leanne and Amber are lip syncing the clips to the music on Final Cut.

16/3/11

Yesterday at 1:05 we brought the drum kit down to the woods from the hall. We spent time setting up outside trying to get the mise-en-scene right. The drum kit was the most difficult to set up but I managed to do it from recalling how I took it apart.
An hour in we had technical difficulty when the i pod speakers ran out of battery, I went and got some batteries which worked for half an hour longer before we resorted to using Ambers phone playing the song. This was harder to hear which made trying to performer to it difficult. When we were filming alot of students came outside by our set up to smoke, which was distracting, especially when three boys came over to the drum, kit and asked to play it. One of the boys then broke a stick in half and attempted to play the drums. We stepped in and stated that the drums were for hire and playing the kit with the sharp sticks would damage the kit. The boys walked away and we were free to get back to work.

Though this scene had its problems I think that we managed to get some really good shots and made the music video look professional and realistic.

Tuesday 15 March 2011

15/3/11

Today we are filming the scene in woods by the college. Currently Leanne is filming a scene at home in her room and will be in soon. We plan to film the scene at lunch time and hope that the weather does not disturb our filming.

I think that the biggest issues we are going to face today are the setting up off the drum kit and the possibility of rain.  I continue to check the weather for today so just in case it rains. The weather for today is misty, this doesn't seem like to much of a problem except for the lighting of the scene.
I'm trying to think of alternative settings. An alternative setting I have thought of is the main hall, but I would have to ask for permission.

Technical Analysis of Video- Foo Fighters 'All My Life'

1) Number of setup changes (change of location/ costume/ performer)

  • three location changes. The car park, corridor, and stage.
  • there is only one costume for each of the band.
  • there are four performers. Singer, guitarist, bassist, and drummer.

2) The different camera angles used in each set up

  • Midshots
  • close-ups
  • crane
  • tracking
  • low angle
  • high angle

3) How the editing works between these elements

  • the editing is fast
  • changing between each edit using out of focus effects.
  • At the high point of the video they spotlight the different members of the band, with 1 second edits.
4) What can you learn from this
I can learn that it is good to use quick changes to keep the audiences attention, and use lighting well to bring that extra professional touch.

14/3/11

Today we were meant to filming in the woods by the college, as we couldn't on friday, but due to costume complications we are unable to do any filming. We can't film tomorrow until half way through second lesson, due to performers having appointments.

Friday 11 March 2011

11/3/11

Today we contacted Millers Music Centre asking what time the drums and mic are being delivered. The manager of the store, Barry Robinson, has said that he and his workers are trying to contact the people who are meant to be delivering the drum kit and mic. We are still waiting to hear from them, so we can start filming in the forest.

While we have been waiting we have done our make up for the performance and sorted the costume and hair. We got the rest of our props ready; Two guitars, amp and drum sticks.
